KTM 540's were quite possibly the worlds fastest dirt bikes ever built. Expert only horsepower, these bikes were built to out-perform CR500's WR500's, and KX500's. This is the very rare DX-C (Desert Cross Country / Competion) version. KTM built 2 other versions as well: the M-XC's (Moto cross) and E-XC's (Enduro).
Note that this bike needs a total resto but it's all there. Reproduction plastics available in any color you want through DCPlastics (dcvmx.com). Seat covers, grips, graphics, tires, etc. all available through ebay.
Nice original tank, Renthal bars, excellent Nordisc wheels, etc. This is a really clean, rare core bike. No corrosion; this is a solid, dry AZ bike that needs a decent resto.
Motor turns smoothly and spark is great. Excellent compression. Pipe is decent and includes original silencer. WP (White Power) Dutch built inverted forks and single shock rear suspension were a very hard combination to beat back in those days (far superior to Showa and KYB components). Brembo disc brakes, Talon hubs; Nothing but the best was utilized by the Austrian factory in order to take on the big-4 Japanese factories, and they succeeded. Today, KTM-Husqvarna builds some of the best competition dirt motorcycles on the planet.
Will need a resto but these 540-550 KTM's are worth K when nicely restored. They are also one of the fastest damn dirt bikes ever built, and are a total blast to ride. You had better hang on because these bikes are super fast. The engine alone is worth what I'm asking for the whole bike.
You gotta' love KTM. They built their bikes with a 'no cost spared' mentality, as only the finest and most expensive components were used.
KTM engines were considered some of the fastest 2-stroke engines ever built for their classes.
